How to Set Up a WooCommerce Pop-up on Exit or Timer for Campaign Monitor

As the biggest eCommerce framework in the world, WooCommerce is an incredibly handy tool—and as such, you want to make the most of it. When you combine it with some of Digioh’s lead-generation tools (like the Lightbox pop-up), you have a powerful conversion tool that can dramatically improve your business’s income. Let’s get started!

The Lightbox and the Slider

A quick summary of the Lightbox: it’s is a popup box that, generally speaking, presents an offer to the page visitor in exchange for their email. You may have seen it on blogs or on major eCommerce sites like Shopify, BigCommerce, or Magento.

The Lightbox is a great lead-generation tool to combine with WooCommerceDigioh’s own Lightbox is clean and simple, yet very effective at conversion.

When you set the Lightbox up on your site, your visitors see it and are prompted to give you their email address in exchange for something nice—a discount code, a free ebook, a free trial of a product, etc. Once they’ve done that, you can start marketing to them, thereby increasing your conversion and sales (sometimes by more than 1.5%!).

An alternative to the Lightbox is the Slider, which works under the same concept save for one exception: instead of popping up in the middle of their screen, it slides out like a sidebar.

With both the Lightbox and the Slider, you can customize their functionality in ways like having a small, unobtrusive CTA that follows the visitor from page to page, choosing when the popup show up, and adjusting the look and feel of it to match your site.

Exit-intent Offer vs. Timed Offer

Two of the most effective ways to implement the Lightbox are thus: to have it show up whenever a customer goes to leave a page; to have it pop up on its own after a certain period of time. Which one you choose to use will depend on your business.

For the exit-intent option, it can be highly effective to simply repurpose an offer in the form of your Lightbox. For example, say that you have dropped the price of a product from $15 to $10. A visitor may very well be attracted to it when they see the “$15.00 only $10.00!” price tag, but maybe the idea of “$5 off” isn’t appealing enough to them. When they go to exit the page, your Lightbox will pop up and will reiterate the offer, but in different terms: this time it will say “Wait! Want to save 33% off?” which, while the same offer, sounds different enough that you’ll get a few more customers with it.

Timed Lightbox Option

With the timed option, you can implement a coupon offer (you can see how to set up coupons in WooCommerce here.): if your visitor is on a page for x-number of seconds, a Lightbox will pop up offering a coupon in exchange for their email (an example offer would be “Save $10 on your first order! Enter your email so we can send you the code.”)

Additional Option: The QA Widget

If you have an expensive product, customers may feel more comfortable talking it over before purchasing it. In this case, a simple coupon code won’t necessarily suffice to convert them. In this case, you’ll want to use a QA Widget.

Think of the QA Widget as a blend of the Lightbox, a contact form, and a non-live chat session. It is a popup that gives users the (accurate) impression that though you may not be immediately reachable, you will respond to their needs and are happy to help. Most QA Widgets implement a headshot and other basic info (like a name) to make them feel more personal. Customers enter basic info (like a name and email address, but you can customize it to your own needs) and a question they have, and are quickly assured that they will receive a prompt response.

The Lightbox Setup

Now we get to the biggest part of this article: getting your Lightbox set up! What you want out of the Lightbox really depends on how you see your business and what you feel would look best.

1. The Preliminary Stuff

We have to get a few things done first, though, like signing up with Digioh. You can get a free trial account so you can get a feel for all this, or you can hit us up and we’ll be happy to show you a quick, personalized demo for all of this!

(In addition to signing up for a Digioh account, don’t forget to install the Digioh WooCommerce plugin!)

2. Getting Familiar with the Lightbox Design

Now that that’s done, let’s customize the look and feel of your Lightbox. After signing in to your account, head on over to the “Lightboxes” tab (if you weren’t taken there automatically) and hit the “New Lightbox” button.

From here, you have all sorts of prebuilt themes you can choose to start with. Just browse through them till you find something you like, then select it (remember, you can always change things about it!).

Now that you’ve selected your base Lightbox, you’ll see all sorts of options on the left. Go ahead and edit to your heart’s content—that’s what they’re there for!

3. Setting Rules for Your Lightbox

Does it look good now? Cool. That means it’s time to set conditions for it now. Click the “Edit Conditions” button in the “Conditions” tab on the left.

Here, you’ll see an “Add Conditions” button; clicking it will give you the option to add a new rule for your Lightbox. This can range from if the Lightbox pops up on its own (and how quickly) to only allowing the Lightbox to pop up for first-time visitors who are on Chrome at a desktop (as an example) to having it only appear until a certain date (which is great for advertising promotions). These are only a few examples of what it can do; a complete list would take a long time!

Once you’ve finalized the rules and conditions for your Lightbox, hit “Publish” and get ready to watch leads generate themselves.

Always Follow Up: Campaign Monitor

You’ll want to make sure you follow up with all the emails you collect. With Campaign Monitor involved, this is super easy.

We’ll go ahead and do a quick run-through of how to get an automatic email system set up for this, but you’re also welcome to read Campaign Monitor’s post on it if you prefer.

Step 1: The Basics

Go to the Automation section of your account and click on “Create a new journey.” After you do that, it will want a name for your journey as well as a few other things. Decide on a name for it, select your email list, and then select the “Subscriber joins a list” option for the trigger.

Step 2: The Automation Process

Now that you’ve set up the framework for your autoresponder, click the plus sign under the “Subscriber joins a list” box; select “Email.” This creates the first email a subscriber will receive and it sends it out immediately (which we’ve found gets the highest open rate). Go to the left side of the page and edit the email as desired, making sure to hit “Add Email Content” and actually writing the email.

Now hit the plus sign again, but this time select “Delay.” You’ll want to input two days for the delay time (again, we’ve found this to be the optimal timeframe). Now set up another email with custom content again (this is the second email going out), then repeat this once more for the third email (except that, with the third email, set the delay to seven days).

You’re done!

How To: Send a Secure File after Someone Signs Up on your Campaign Monitor Form

When someone signs up to your email list it’s important to welcome them into your community right away.  One way to show your appreciation is to send them a small gift such as a free ebook or magazine. You can now easily welcome your subscribers and automatically send them a download link to any document you’d like right after they sign up with your Campaign Monitor form. See the steps below to learn how.

Step 1: Create a list and subscription form in Campaign Monitor

If you don’t already have one set up, it’s very easy to create an email list and subscription form.  Just log in to Campaign Monitor, click on the Lists & Subscribers tab, then the Create a new list button.

Create a New Campaign Monitor ListGive your list a name and decide whether or not you’d like to have subscribers confirm their subscription (for more info on single vs. confirmed opt-in click here).  Now that you’ve created your list, you’ll need to create a sign up form.  First, ask what information you’d like your subscribers to provide.  If it’s anything beyond a name and an email, you’ll have to create some custom fields.

On the right side of the screen click on Custom fields, and add as many new fields as you want.

Now, go back to your List’s main page and from that same right-side menu, select Grow your audience.  You have a number of options on how you can present your subscription form.  If you’re savvy with code, you might copy and paste a form into your website.  For this article, we’ll Edit your subscribe button.  Click on the link under the code to customize your form and add in your newly created custom fields.  When finished, you can click on the button to see a preview of your form and then copy/paste the code where you want it to live on your website.Preview of Campaign Monitor Subscribe Button

Step 2: Create a download link to your file with Digioh

Now that you’ve set up your form, you’ll need to set up your document.  Sign up for Digioh, a service that allows you to send, track, and protect files for your Campaign Monitor subscribers.

Once you have a Digioh account, connect it to your Campaign Monitor account and Add a File.

Under Security Options, you’ll see a few choices: List Grower Security (a person can sign up to view the document), Membership Security (the person must already be on your list to view it), or No Security.  Since we want sign ups in this case, choose your list from List Grower Security.  This way, if anyone forwards the link to your document, they’ll be prompted to join your list.

After setting your options, move on to the next page.  Your document will upload and you’ll receive the download link to copy/paste in your Campaign Monitor welcome email.

Step 3: Paste your Digioh download link in the Campaign Monitor Autoresponder

With your download link in hand, head back over to Campaign Monitor List page and from the right-side menu select Autoresponders.  Fill out your preferences on the next few pages, then import or build your email template.

Using the WYSIWYG editor you can customize the design and edit the content of your autoresponder. In the content editor, hyperlink your Digioh download URL where it fits best in your message.

When you are finished, don’t forget to Start the Autoresponder.

All that’s left is to test your set up! Use your subscription button to subscribe yourself and see if your autoresponder and download links are working correctly.
